Volunteer Spotlight
In this post we highlight Gil Smith, a volunteer who has worked with The Women’s Safe House for over seventeen years. Our volunteers serve as an invaluable resource to our organization. Without people like Gil, The Women’s Safe House would be unable to successfully serve victims of domestic violence in our community.
“Everyone should find a cause they are passionate about” encourages Gil Smith – husband, retired chef/IT professional, and volunteer.
Introduced to The Women’s Safe House through our annual golf tournament, Gil joined the Board of Directors in 2001 and has served in various capacities over the past seventeen years. These days, you can find Gil helping in the computer lab, sharing a friendly greeting or laugh with staff and residents, and supporting corporate and university service days at the shelter. His charismatic personality and passion for serving others helps volunteer groups connect with our mission and experience the rewards of volunteerism. Gil shared, “volunteering provides a great deal of satisfaction and helps me to be more empathetic towards the world.” He credits his mom for teaching him the value of giving back and instilling a strong code of ethics. Gil enjoys gardening, cooking, painting, travel, and spending time with friends and family – yet still makes time to volunteer every week with several organizations. He learned “to make what’s really important the priority because people need help.”
Our sincerest thanks to Gil for his ongoing service and dedication to The Women’s Safe House. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Monica at mdubois@twsh.org or 314.772.4535.
